Welcome to Year 3
Highlights in Year 3 include:
- visiting Creswell Crags to support the children’s understanding of Prehistoric Britain and the scientific topic Rocks and Soils;
- experiencing the life of a Roman soldier when the children take a trip to Houlgate;
- working with Thackeray Medical Museum to aid the understanding of the human body;
- enjoying visits from author Saviour Pirotta, farmer George Strawson, blacksmith Cameron Bell and artist Janine Knight.
A normal day in Year 3 begins with spelling before moving onto English and Maths. Reading is focused on immediately before and after lunch with topic sessions being taught for the remainder of the day.
Our PE and Games lessons are timetabled for a Thursday and a Friday. However, we advise that PE kits are brought into school on a Monday and taken home again on a Friday, just incase.
In Year 3, the children are expected to practise their spelling, reading and maths skills at home. Children should read four times a week from any text they wish. The “Look, Cover, Write, Check” method is a quick, yet effective, way for the children to practise their spellings. Maths homework is handed out on a Thursday and is expected to be handed back on the following Monday, having completed the Yellow and Green tasks. Blue is optional, although we actively encourage the children to try to apply their skills to complete these challenging activities. In addition, TT Rockstars is an excellent resource for children to practise times tables.
