Welcome to Year 1
Welcome to Year 1! In the autumn term, we focus on the transition from Foundation to Year 1 and aim to make this change between the key stages as smooth as possible for the children. Whilst implementing a more structured formal timetable in the morning, the children have opportunity to take responsibility for parts of their own learning in the afternoon. This allows us to deliver an exciting and engaging curriculum to motivate and inspire the children.
A normal day in Year 1 consists of daily phonics sessions, handwriting, English, maths and topic based work. Phonics and early reading is especially important in Year 1 as children prepare for their phonics screening check in the summer term. We also have many trips and visits planned throughout the year please see our curriculum overview for more information.
It is expected that children will read at least twice a week at home to help build upon their fluency and understanding. The children should bring their reading book and record to school each day. Their reading books will be changed every Monday.
Homework is given out on a Friday and is expected to be handed in by the following Wednesday.
Children are given home/school books where they can write about what they have been doing at the weekend and share this with the rest of the class on a Monday.
Each Friday a child is chosen to take home Broughton Bear. The children can fill in a diary entry in his folder to explain what they did with him and then bring this back to school on a Tuesday to share with the class.
Once in Year 1, children are taught PE by Mr McCarron, our school specialist PE teacher. PE takes place on a Monday and Wednesday and children are expected to have an indoor and outdoor PE kit in school each week.
