Gas Masks

During the First World War the Germans had used gas to kill our troops/ soldiers. When the Second World War began everyone was afraid that they would drop bombs containing gas onto Britain.

Everybody was issued with a gas mask, which by law they had to carry with them at all times. Children had to take them to School with them and when they went out to play. The mask were kept in a cardboard box with a piece of string to help carry it. There were different types of masks. There were even masks for babies, which were like bags, which the baby was put inside.

In most masks there were pieces of charcoal and cotton wool to filter and clean the air.

No gas bombs were ever dropped during the war, so they were never needed.
