Mary I

(1553 to 1558)

Edward VI was the only son of Henry VIII. His mother was Jane Seymour, Henry’s third wife who died shortly after giving birth to him.

When Henry VIII died in 1547, his nine-year-old son, Edward VI, succeeded him. He was too young to rule as King on his own, so a ‘Protector’ helped him to rule England until he was old enough.

Edward was a Protestant and during his reign the Latin prayer book (used by the Roman Catholics) was rewritten in English. This new religion became the main religion in England.

Edward never had good health and in 1553, when he was 16, he became very ill and died.
