Henry VIII

Henry VII was the first of the Tudor Kings. The people were glad to have a king who could keep the peace after many years of fighting. He made nobleman keep the law and fined any who tried to build private armies.

Henry VII married Elizabeth of York and so joined the two families of York and Lancaster, who had fought against each other.

Henry VII brought traders, merchants and lawyers into his government and encouraged trade and shipbuilding. When he died in 1509, England had become a wealthy and peaceful country.
