The Tudors

The Battle of Bosworth

In England two royal families had been at war over who was going to be king. The wars were between the House of Lancaster who had the Red Rose as their symbol and House of York who had the White Rose as their symbol. These wars were called ‘the Wars of the Roses’.

In 1485 the battle of Bosworth ended ‘the Wars of the Roses’. Henry (Tudor) VII of the House of Lancaster defeated Richard III of the House of York and became King of England.

Henry VII married Elizabeth of York uniting the two families of Lancaster and York.

Henry VII was the first of the Tudor Kings. The Tudor Rose linked both the houses of Lancaster (the Red Rose) and York (the White Rose) and became the Tudor banner.
