Where is India located?

The country of India is located in the continent of Asia and shares borders to the northwest with Pakistan, to the north with China, Nepal and Bhutan, and to the east with Bangladesh and Myanmar. To the west lies theArabian Sea, to the east the Bay of Bengal and the south of the country projects out in to the Indian Ocean.

Sri Lanka lies off the southeast coast, and the Maldives off the southwest coast.

India is the seventh largest country in the world with a total land area of 3.3 million square kilometres and a coastline of over 7,000 kilometres. To the north of the country are the Himalayas which slope out in to the Indo-Gangetic Plain.

India has a very varied geography. As well as the mountains, plains and seas there are mango forests, desert in Rajistan to the west, marshlands further south, the Ganges in the east which drains out into the world’s largest delta.

The Climate

The climate in India varies from region to region.

In the winter months between November and March it is cold in the north. Central and southern parts are hot in the summer months of April to June. Most of the country has the monsoon that lasts from July to October. Coastal areas have a tropical climate throughout the year.

India has three distinct seasons:
  • Summer - from March to June
  • Rainy - from June to October
  • Winter - from November to March


In India the majority of people belong to the Hindu religion but there is also a large population of Muslims. Other religious groups include Christians, Sikhs and Buddhists.

Traditional dress in India varies across the regions in its colours and styles, and depends on many factors, including climate. The traditional Sari is a popular style of dress for women, traditional dress for men is theDhoti.

Each part of the Indian flag has a meaning:

  • Orange - courage and sacrifice
  • White - Truth, purity and peace
  • Green - Faith, fertility and chivalry
  • Chakra (wheel) – Progress of the Nation
  • There are 24 spokes on the wheel that represent 24 hours in the day.
