These pictures show part one of the Hutong areas in China's capital city Beijing. The Hutong is a traditional dwelling place, based on a central courtyard surrounded by family homes. Over the years the central courtyard space has often been built over as families have grown. Many of the Hutongs have been pulled down and replaced by modern apartment blocks. You can see pictures of these in our Dalian section. Don't be fooled by the look of many of these Hutongs, they have electricity, running water, air conditioning, fridges, televisions and computers. Today, many of these areas are tourist attractions and the houses are worth a lot of money.
